As Memorial Day approaches, our nation stands in solemn remembrance of the courageous souls who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Among the countless stories of heroism and valor, there exists a unique bond between Memorial Day and the Elks, an organization deeply entrenched in the fabric of American history.
Dating back to the late 19th century, the Elks have played a pivotal role in honoring and supporting our nation’s veterans. Their commitment to service and their unwavering dedication to the well-being of veterans have left an indelible mark on communities across the United States.
Perhaps the most enduring legacy of the Elks is their steadfast commitment to honoring the fallen. As Memorial Day approaches each year, Elks lodges across the country organize solemn ceremonies and commemorative events to pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
This year, we continue our tradition of participating in Alameda’s Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park, Monday, May 25. Veterans Memorial Park is located on the south end of the Bay Farm Island Bridge. It is the small park with the tall flagpole flying the large American flag.
It is a tradition that officers and members of the lodge sit together, either wearing a sport coat and tie or equivalent attire. When designated during the ceremony, the Elks (as a group) present a wreath in remembrance of all veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The event starts at 11:00 am. Be sure to arrive early (no later than 10:30 am) so you can get a parking space. If you do not want to participate in the actual presentation of the wreath, you can still come, sit with the Elks, and honor our veterans with your presence. Spouses, significant others, and family are always welcome to participate.
Date: Mon. May 25
Time: 11 am (arrive no later than 10:30 am/be mindful of limited parking)
All are welcome to participate.
Today, as in the past, there are problems that must be solved and challenges that must be met. We can tackle them with our full strength and creativity only because we are free to work them out in our own way. We owe this freedom of choice and action to those men and women in uniform who have served this nation and its interests in time of need. In particular, we are forever indebted to those who have given their lives that we might be free.
– Ronald Reagan, Memorial Day 1983
We ask members to consider supporting a Naval Air Museum fundraiser to help reopen the museum. Details can be found at: AlamedaNavalAirMuseum.org
