• Elks Picnic for Veterans — 2016

For our 35th consecutive year, the Alameda Elks traveled up to the California Veteran’s Home in Yountville, to donate personal items and cook a picnic lunch for the Veterans.vets6  Forty-two Alameda Elks got up early on a Saturday morning to drive up to Yountville to have a great day honoring our Veterans.  Our Elks Antlers were out in force and were a big help.  Dozens more Elks, back at home, donated many boxes of personal items that are badly needed and so appreciated by the Veterans.

As soon as we arrived, Elks just fan out in multiple directions:

    • Unloading boxes of personal items

    • Setting up tables and chairs

    • Taping down tablecloths

    • Firing up the BBQ grillvets8

    • Putting the soda on ice

    • Cutting tomatoes, onions, lettuce, watermelon (and fingers)

    • . . . and Having fun the whole time!

If you would like to know the reason we come to honor the Veterans in Yountville every year,  . . . or the reason we are ELKS . . . please watch this video of the Director of Volunteer Services at the California Veterans Home telling us how much our efforts mean to the Veterans:

It wasn’t all hard work!  We had fun too, entertaining the Veterans and the Staff, thanks to Jay & Fran Shockley.  Here’s Jay “kickin it up” with one of the staff:

Here are a few more photos from the day.  This really is one of the reasons we are Elks.  See you next year on August 19th!
